Loading Dock Safety Signage: Where Pedestrians, Forklifts, and a Four-Foot Drop Meet
The dock is the most dangerous twenty feet in most warehouses, because everything that can hurt someone shares the same concrete.
A loading dock combines powered equipment, pedestrians, a drop of about four feet to the apron, trailers that move when nobody expects them to, and a schedule that punishes hesitation. The hazards are not exotic. They are the same six things every shift, which is exactly why they get ignored until someone goes off the edge.

The six hazards, mapped
- Open dock edge. Fall hazard, keep clear. On every empty bay. This is the one that produces the serious injuries, because an empty bay looks like floor until it is not
- Dock leveler. Moving platform, crush hazard, keep clear during operation
- Trailer may move without warning. Trailer creep and early departure. At the bay, facing the dock floor
- Forklift traffic. High-traffic area, struck-by hazard, at the lane and at every point where a walkway crosses it
- Overhead staging. Falling objects where material is racked above the floor near the dock
- Wheel chocks and restraints. Chock before boarding, on the apron side where the driver sees it
What OSHA actually requires
Fall protection. Under 1910.28, general industry employers must protect employees from falls of 4 feet or more to a lower level. A dock edge sits at roughly 48 to 52 inches. The practical control on an active dock is a removable barrier or dock gate across empty bays, since a permanent guardrail cannot coexist with a trailer.
Chocks and restraints. 1910.178(k)(1) requires that highway trucks be braked and that wheel chocks be placed under the rear wheels to prevent rolling while they are boarded by powered industrial trucks. Vehicle restraint systems that engage the trailer's rear impact guard are the modern alternative and are accepted where they secure the trailer at least as well.
Dock boards. 1910.178(n)(11) requires dock boards and bridge plates to be properly secured before being driven over.
Uncoupled trailers. 1910.178(k)(2) requires fixed jacks where necessary to support a semitrailer during loading or unloading when it is not coupled to a tractor.
Trailer creep, which the code does not name but everyone has seen
Every time a forklift enters a trailer, the impact pushes it forward a fraction of an inch. Over a load, the trailer walks away from the dock, the leveler lip loses its purchase, and the gap opens. Nobody sees it happen. Chocks are the minimum. Restraints are better. A sign telling the forklift operator to check the gap before every entry is how the habit gets built.
Early departure
A driver who pulls out while a forklift is still inside kills people. Communication systems, dock lights, and restraint interlocks are the engineering controls. The sign at the bay, facing the driver, telling them not to move without the green light, is the administrative one that costs twenty-five dollars.
Where signage fits
Dock hazards are all about position: which bay is open, which lane is for forklifts, where the walkway crosses, where the edge is. Signage is a map of the dock for someone who is looking at their load rather than the floor. The edge marking in particular is the difference between a bay that reads as floor and one that reads as a drop.
