Safety Signage for Manufacturing and Industrial Plants
Six of OSHA's ten most-cited standards are plant-floor standards. The signage program is where most of them get checked first.
Hazard communication, lockout/tagout, respiratory protection, powered industrial trucks, machine guarding, and eye and face protection all come up on the same walkthrough, and the inspector's first question at each station is whether the hazard is identified. A plant that posts well does not avoid every citation, but it avoids the ones that come from a hazard nobody could see.

Where plants get written up
Machine guarding. Nip points on rotating rolls, sever hazards at blades, crush at presses and conveyors, entanglement at extruders, mixers, and drives. Machine guarding is on OSHA's instance-by-instance citation list and sits inside the National Emphasis Program on Amputations, which means a facility with presses, saws, or conveyors is inside a targeted enforcement program rather than waiting on a random visit. Lockout/tagout. Energy isolation points, disconnects, and equipment under service have to be identifiable by someone who did not apply the lock. LOTO is also instance-by-instance, so one inspection can cite per machine. Guide: lockout/tagout
Hazard communication. Chemical storage rooms, spill zones, corrosive and flammable areas, and the OSHA regulated-area substances with mandated wording: benzene, cadmium, lead, hexavalent chromium, silica, beryllium, formaldehyde, methylene chloride, and the rest. Electrical. Switchgear rooms, MCCs, panels, and any equipment serviced energized need arc flash field marking under NFPA 70E and NEC 110.16, plus the 36-inch working clearance in front of panels that storage always creeps into. Guide: arc flash field marking
Process-specific hazards. This is where generic catalogs run out and we keep going: caustic soda transfer points and fill stations, recovery boilers and lime kilns in pulp and paper, digester blow lines, extruder barrel heaters and feed hoppers in plastics, batch plant hoppers and mixer discharge, grain dust and silo engulfment, hot mixer discharge, abrasive blast pots, cryogenic cooling, and industrial fryer vats.
