Drone Operations Area Signage: Takeoff Zones, Flight Corridors, and What a Sign Can Legally Control
A hazard category so new that most sign catalogs do not have a section for it.
Commercial drones are now routine on construction sites, at utilities, in agriculture, at film shoots, in surveying, and increasingly for lifting and delivery. They bring a set of hazards nobody had to post ten years ago: spinning propellers at head height during takeoff, a multi-pound aircraft that can fall out of the sky when a battery or link fails, suspended loads under lift drones, and ground crews who wander into a landing zone because nothing told them it was one.
What the rules are, and who they bind
FAA Part 107 governs commercial operation of small unmanned aircraft under 55 pounds. It binds the operator, not the property. The core rules: a certificated remote pilot in command, operation within visual line of sight, below 400 feet above ground level, yielding to manned aircraft, and restrictions on flying over people that depend on the aircraft's category and weight. Night operation is permitted with anti-collision lighting and training. Most drones must broadcast Remote ID.
OSHA has no drone-specific standard. Drone operations at a workplace fall under the general duty clause and whatever existing standards apply to the surrounding work, such as fall protection for a crew on a roof near a landing zone.
What a sign can and cannot control
This is the part worth understanding before you post anything.
You cannot control the airspace over your property. The FAA has exclusive jurisdiction over navigable airspace, and a landowner's sign does not create a no-fly zone. A drone flying over your facility at 300 feet is the FAA's business, and if it is a genuine problem, the route is a request for a UAS flight restriction, which the FAA can grant for certain critical infrastructure and sensitive facilities.
You can control your ground. Takeoff and landing from your property, operation by your own crews, and access to areas where your drones operate are yours to govern. A No Drone Zone sign on private property is a statement that takeoff and landing are prohibited there and that unauthorized operation will be reported. That is enforceable as a property rule and it is what the sign actually means.
The operations area, mapped
- Takeoff and landing zone. Strike hazard from propellers, do not enter during launch and recovery. This is where the ground crew injuries happen
- Flight corridor. The ground beneath the planned flight path, where a falling aircraft lands. Keep out during operations, particularly for lift work
- Lift operations. Suspended load, falling load hazard, keep clear. Same logic as a crane swing radius, at a smaller scale and with a less predictable aircraft
- Perimeter. Drone flight operations in progress, authorized personnel only. At the site entrance, so a visitor knows before walking in
Operations over people
Part 107 restricts flying over people who are not participating in the operation and not under a covered structure or in a stationary vehicle. The rules depend on the aircraft's category, which is tied to its weight and the injury it could cause. The practical site control is simpler than the regulation: keep non-participants out from under the flight path. That is what the corridor exclusion zone and its signage are for.
What gets missed
- Ground crew standing in the landing zone at recovery, because the aircraft is quiet on descent
- Lift operations treated as photography flights, with no exclusion under the load
- Visitors and other trades on a shared site who were never told drones were flying
- Battery handling: the same lithium-ion hazards as any other battery, concentrated in a case in the back of a truck
- Posting a No Drone Zone sign and believing it controls airspace. It controls takeoff, landing, and your own crews. Nothing more, and that is still worth posting
Where signage fits
Drone operations are new enough that the people around them have no instinct for the hazard. Nobody grew up knowing not to walk under a lift drone. The posted sign is the whole safety briefing for the surveyor, the delivery driver, and the site visitor who arrived after the morning toolbox talk. And in a category where regulation is still catching up, a documented site policy is the thing that holds up afterward.
